This year we were lucky enough to plan a trip to Disneyland.  It was going to be the first time our baby girl would get to experience the magic of Disney.  Yes she will probably never remember this first trip, but I will and I wanted to make it extra special.  I decided to make the kids matching shirts.  To go along with their cute shirts, I made each of the girls a Minnie Mouse Skirt.

Now, I am not expert seamstress, but I can sew a (somewhat) straight line.  I’m also not a perfectionist, so I’m ok if it’s not perfect.  But if you can sew a mostly straight line, you can make this skirt for your little beauties too!

How to Make a Minnie Mouse Skirt

I found my red fabric with white polka dots at Hobby Lobby.  I used less than a yard of fabric to make both skirts.  The fabric was 44 inches wide and I used that as the width of both skirts.  I took the size of the girls waist and doubled that and they were both really close to 44 inches so that made it easy.  Then I cut the length.  I measured from waist to knee and added about an inch for hem and waist band.

Once I cut the length, I folded the hem on one side.  I made a 1/4 inch hem by folding up 1/4 inch and then folding another 1/4 inch.  I used an iron to keep the hem laying flat.  Since I used an iron to keep the hem down, I didn’t need to use any pins.  I used the guide on the top of the sewing machine and sewed the hem.

For the elastic waist band I cut it the length of the girls waist.  I then simply over lapped the elastic over the fabric about 1/4 to 1/2 inch.  I pinned the elastic to the fabric at one end.  I then pinned the other end of the elastic to the other end of the fabric (44 inches).

To help the gathering of the skirt, I pinned the middle of the elastic to the middle of the fabric.  I then measured from one end to the halfway mark to find the middle of that section and pinned the elastic and fabric together there.  I did the same on the other side of the halfway mark.  You can keep pinning the elastic to the fabric to make it easier to sew the gathers.

To sew the elastic to the skirt I placed the skirt under the needle and put the foot down.  Holding the fabric at the top, I pulled the elastic (stretched it) and began to sew.  This was a little tricky since the elastic was tight to stretch.  For the most part it gathered fine, there were a couple places I had to help gather it as I was sewing.

Once the elastic was on, I folded it in half, to sew the seam.

Once I sewed the seam I tucked the bottom part of the seam up and tacked it so it wouldn’t stick out.  Then I tacked down the top at the elastic so it would lay flat and not bother the girls as they wore them.

The girls looked so cute in their matching outfits.  I had some left over fabric from this Minnie Mouse skirt DIY, so I could make a bow for their Minnie Mouse shirt.  To make the shirts I used iron on vinyl and cut out a Mickey Mouse head using my Cricut.  You can see this easy Mickey Mouse shirt tutorial or my other Disney Shirts if you don’t want to use iron on vinyl.

Little Missy was super excited to have breakfast with Minnie while we were there in her cute Minnie Mouse skirt and shirt.  Baby girl was a little afraid of Minnie at first but she came around.  Baby girl doesn’t say much, but she can say Minnie and got excited when she walked in.

We actually have another trip to Disney planned and I’m excited these beauties get to wear their Minnie Mouse skirts again!

I’m hoping they get to see Minnie again and they both will want to give her a hug!

Happy Sewing!
