Red and polka dots just happen to be one of my very favorite combinations.  So it’s no wonder that Minnie Mouse is my most favorite Disney character.  If I could rock a red and white polka dot dress, I would totally be sporting one 24/7 too.  In honor of Miss Minnie and national polk dot day (did you know that’s a thing?), I made a Minnie Rock the Dots shirt for each of my daughters.

I was really inspired to make a rock the dots shirt when I found this red polka dot patterned heat transfer vinyl from Expressions Vinyl.  You don’t have to have the polka dot patterened vinyl, you can use regular solid colored vinyl too.

To make a Minnie Rocks the Dots Shirt you will need:

Cricut Maker or Cutting Machine

Iron on vinyl or heat transfer vinyl (they are the same thing, just sometimes called different names)

Cutting Mat

Iron on vinyl

Iron on vinyl

Weeding Tool

EasyPress 2

EasyPress Mat

Plain White Shirts

Rock the Dots Cut Files (one is all solid, one has dots already cut out in the DOTS)

Once you have downloaded and unzipped the Rock the Dots cut files, upload the SVG into Cricut Design Space. Open the desired rock the dots cut file onto your canvas and size it to fit your shirt.  You will see there are 2 layers in the layers panel.  You can cut it with the bow design, or turn off the bow layer if you just want the words.  If you are going to keep the bow, click attach at the bottom of the layers panel, and then the design layers will cut in the exact location when you go to cut the design.

Be sure to click the mirror image button on the right hand under the cutting mat view.  Place the patterned iron on vinyl facedown onto the cutting mat.  (If you use a solid red iron on vinyl, the backside is also red.  So make sure to place the vinyl shiny side down.) Load the mat into the machine and select iron on as your cutting material.  Click the green blinking go button on the machine to begin cutting.

Unload the mat from the machine and remove the vinyl from the mat.  Use the weeding tool to remove the unwanted vinyl from your design.  Flip the design over and place on your shirt shiny side up.  Keeping the protective plastic cover sheet on the vinyl until after you have ironed the design onto your shirt.

Set the EasyPress 2 to the recommended settings for iron on.  Lay the shirt on the EasyPress mat and once the design is placed where you want, press the shirt with the EasyPress 2 for 30 seconds on the front.  With the plastic cover still on the vinyl, turn the shirt over and press for 15 seconds on the back.  For the patterned vinyl, I waited until the design was cooled down before I removed the plastic cover sheet.

I decided to use the second design with the dots already cut out of the design for my younger daughter.  I used everyday iron on in red from Cricut to make her Minnie Rock the Dots shirt.  She was so excited that she wanted to help me.  I couldn’t resist taking a picture of those little hands removing the protective cover sheet.
