I am super excited about this project! I’m excited because it’s a holiday project and because you can use it for both Thanksgiving and Christmas! I also love the fact that it wasn’t too difficult to make. You see, I wanted to dress up my new front porch for the holidays, and since my porch is kind of big, I needed something big to fill the space. That is when I knew I wanted to make a big holiday porch sign. But the best part about this holiday porch sign . . . it’s reversible!
I got the idea of making this sign reversible from a craft night I went to with Lolly Jane. We made a reversible sign there and I thought, how brilliant! Here is how I made my reversible holiday porch sign.
It all starts with a 1 inch pine board that is 1 foot by 4 foot. There is no need for wood cutting with this project! Score! I then stained my wood board. If you’ve never stained wood before, it’s really not hard. Just a little messy maybe. See how I stained the wood for my a frame chalkboard.
Now to make the Thankful side, I had some vinyl cut to say Thankful and left the letters. I added my vinyl letters to my stained board. I could’ve left it at that, but I wanted to do a kind of reverse effect. Once my vinyl was down, I painted over the entire board with white paint. I did 2 coats but left it looking a little streaky. That is the look I was going for. You could always add another coat or two if you don’t like the way that looks.
Once the paint was almost dry, I removed the vinyl letters so that the stained board showed through. Then I took my hand sander and with a high grit sand paper (150) I sanded the edges and distressed the board until I got the effect I wanted.
Don’t you love my “work bench”? 2 folding chairs. 🙂 Whatever works right?!?!
I sprayed a coat of sealer on before putting out on the front porch. Add a pumpkin, a fall wreath and any other fun fall related decor and your all ready for the holiday!
So that was how I made the Thanksgiving side, here is how I made the Christmas side.
I started out with the stained board and before adding any stencils, I painted the board white. I used an extra coat or 2 of white on this side because I wanted it to have a crisper look. Once my paint was dry, I added my stencil. Now it is really hard to see the stencil in that middle picture. It’s because my stencil was white and the board was white. But this time, I removed the letters of the stencil, leaving the negative, because I wanted to paint in the letters red. Which is what the next step is. Paint in the letters with red acrylic paint.
I removed the vinyl stencil and had nice crisp red letters on my board. Then I used my hand sander to distress the sign.
It too looks great with a little added Christmas decor. I even used the reverse side of my a frame chalkboard to add a little winter cheer.
So now I can switch up my Thanksgiving porch decorations to Christmas decorations super quick. It’s just a turn of the holiday porch sign!
Happy Crafting!
