I’m a fairly new fan of Halloween. Once I started having kids, I really got into the Halloween spirit.   Making shirts for my kids is one of my absolute favorite things to do.  I make a new shirt for them for almost every holiday and when we go on vacation to Disneyland.  Usually I just use heat transfer vinyl and create a fun design and put it on a plain t-shirt.  They always look really cute.  But this year, I am really feeling the candy corn and thought it’d be fun to use a little tie dye and make the kids candy corn inspired shirts.

Now if you are a true candy corn aficionado, you might realize that the color on my shirts is not exactly like the candy corn.  Now, I decided to go with the yellow in the middle because it was brighter and the design I thought would stand out better.  And I just imagined how cute that little touch of orange on the bottom would look.  So if you want to stay true to the candy corn, feel free to add the colors in order you like.

This is my first time actually doing tie dye.  It’s true, I tend to stay away from things that might be too messy and too much work.  These candy corn tie dye shirts are actually really easy.  They take some time, but that’s mostly waiting for the dye to set in the shirt.  I folded my shirts and used rubber bands to create 3 separate sections.

I decided to do tie dye because I wanted the shirts to still be soft.  Sometimes fabric paint feels too stiff to me, and I didn’t want that to bother the kids.  I picked up some tulip tie dye kits in orange and yellow.  They came with gloves, rubber bands, instructions and design ideas.  All I had to do was add water to the plastic bottle with the dye, shake it up, and saturate the shirts.  I covered my work surface with a plastic trash bag and covered that with paper towels.  Clean up was really easy.  I then wrapped each shirt in plastic wrap and let them sit for a couple hours.

I think the hardest part was rinsing out the dye before I washed the shirts.  Once the shirts started rinsing clear instead of yellow or orange, I washed them in hot water and little laundry soap.  The instructions do say to wash them separately a couple times in case there is extra dye that needs to be washed out.

Now these shirts are cute on their own, but with my love of heat transfer vinyl, I just couldn’t leave it alone.  I created a couple fun Halloween designs and cut them out with my Cricut and ironed them onto the shirts.

The kiddos were big fans of these shirts.  And we immediately headed to the store to buy some candy corn.  I mentioned that I was feeling candy corn this year, but the truth is, I feel the candy corn every year.  Here are some of my favorite candy corn projects.
