We have officially been in our house for 1 year! We are happy with our decision to move and love the area and our neighbors. My one complaint, white carpet. It’s really nice carpet, but white isn’t always the best choice with little people in the house. Well little people and a husband who works construction! 🙂 I never thought I’d have to know how to get grease out of carpet, but that day did come. Grease is bad on any color carpet.
Just look at that disgusting green colored grease. I mean, what was he using this on that it would get all over his boots? To say I was mad would be an understatement. It wasn’t just in one spot either. There were about 7 grease spots on my carpet before he realized what had happened. UGH!
The first thing I needed to do was get the thick areas of grease out of the carpet. To do that I got a dry towel, laid it over the grease, pinched the towel and the carpet and pulled up.
Just by doing that over and over, it got a lot of the grease off the surface of the carpet.
To get the rest of the grease out of the carpet, I mixed together in a small bowl:
1 tsp white vinegar
1 tsp dawn dish soap
1 cup warm water
I mixed that all together gently so as not to create bubbles. I dipped a clean corner of my rag into the mixture and laid it over the top of the grease stained area for about 5 minutes. After the 5 minutes I did the same thing I did with the dry towel and pinched the carpet and pulled up. I tried to avoid rubbing in circles and making the grease go more into the strands of the carpet.
This mixture did a good job of getting that disgusting green gunk out of my carpets.
The grease came out pretty good and the carpet looked fine. But after a while, the areas where I got the grease out of the carpet started showing dirt again. The residue left in the carpet started collecting dirt. Yes I probably could’ve gotten the dirt out of the carpet, but I knew that it would eventually show up again. Plus it had been a year since our white carpet had been cleaned, and with 3 kids (one of which smashed a blueberry into the carpet) and a husband that works construction (and hardly takes off his work boots when he walks on the carpet), I felt it was time to get them cleaned professionally.
Since I live in the Phoenix Valley, I scheduled an appointment with Zerorez to have them come out to my house and clean my carpets. They are offering 3 rooms cleaned for only $119 right now! That is a smoking deal! I had them clean my family room and living room. The family room had the grease stains and the living room had the blueberry stains.
What is great about Zerorez is that they don’t use harsh chemicals. I knew my kids were safe to be there while they were cleaning the carpets and wasn’t afraid of them walking on it before it was completely dry. They use empowered water to clean carpets. That’s why they say, they clean green!! The process was easy and quick. I vacuumed the area before they arrived to remove any dirt from the carpet. The tech used a pre-spray on the areas where the grease marks were starting to show to loosen up the dirt and then used the empowered water to vacuum everything up.
I was super happy with the results! The tech was super nice and took care to protect my home while he was working there. He wore booties during his inspection to not track dirt into my home and covered all the corners of my walls so the hoses wouldn’t leave marks on my walls. He was there for maybe an hour. They got in and got the job done.
The worst part about getting carpets cleaned is having to wait FOR-EVER for the carpets to dry. While we did have to wait a few hours, we were able to put our furniture back and walk on the carpet that evening (about 6 hours later).
I will still be using my soap and vinegar mixture to get grease out of my carpet the next time my husband decides to track it through the house, but it’s nice to know that the residue left behind can be cleaned out of the carpet when I’m ready.
Happy Cleaning!
