We love any excuse to throw a party around here. But really love it when we get to celebrate one of kiddos turning a year older. I mean, I always get a little sad as they become one year older. But the kids, they love a party all about them.
This year as our youngest turns 6, we celebrated this spunky, spirited, smart little girl with a Hawaiian luau party. And she loved it! I loved that it was really easy to put together. Especially with the help of Oriental Trading.
Luau Decoration Ideas
When I put together a party, I try and keep things as simple as possible. Trying to have one main focal point of the party. For me, that is usually the food table. I tend to make this the focal point of any party I have.
My grandmother has been a caterer for over 40 years, so that might be why our parties always involve good food. But the food table is usually where most guests hang out, take a break, enjoy each others company and of course it has the food! So I like it to be extra special.
Oriental trading has so many amazing decor items, specifically for a luau. I feel like I only used a few compared to everything they have.
The giant monstera leaves we used not only as a back drop, but also on our table. To add a little green to break up all the white of the serving dishes. I added some color to our food table with the giant hibiscus flowers added to our backdrop, along with the 3D standing hibiscus. They made a great centerpiece.
I hate to say this, but I’m kind of a table cloth snob. Goes back to those catering genes I inherited. It really bugs me when a table cloth doesn’t go all the way to the ground. That is why I loved this grass skirt table skirt. It was easily attached to a plastic table cover with just a stapler. And it can be used again and again. It totally pulled our table together.
I also added some fun to our table back drop with these big tiki cut outs. They are super fun and a lot bigger than I thought they would be. They looked great on either side of the table, and as a party game, we played pin the mustache on the tiki. The kids thought it was super funny.
Luau Party Food Ideas
Since I like to make my food table the star of the party, I have to also serve some delicious food. And delicious, doesn’t mean it has to be difficult. Keep the party food simple. Especially if it’s a party with kids attending. Maybe it’s just my kids, but they can be a little picky.
We served everyone’s favorite hot ham and cheese sliders. The sweet hawaiian rolls used are perfect for any luau. We finished them off with these cut flower picks. The picks also made great centerpieces!
I whipped up a batch of my sparkling pina colada party punch and served them in the super cute pineapple cups. When my kids saw these, they thought they were so fun! They couldn’t wait to use them. I’m sure they will make regular appearances this summer.
Right now is the perfect time to enjoy all those delicous summer fruits. And they looked so great on the tiki fruit skewers. All the kids at the party wanted to keep their fruit skewers. My nephew held his like a piece of corn on the cob and ate his fruit like that. Haha!
Adding a side of chips or in our case rice, rounded out the menu, keeping our party simple but delicious.
Easy Luau Party Ideas
To really get the full effect of a Hawaiian Luau party, everyone needs to dress the part. Am I right? These colorful leis, I have to say, are some of the nicest leis I have every seen or used. The colors are gorgeous, they even come with a few rainbow colored ones. They are just really, really nice. Everyone got to choose their favorite color, which is always a plus.
I went back and forth about what grass skirts to have at the party. These kid size grass skirtskid size grass skirts were awesome they are the perfect length and use velcro to attach in the back. So they fit young and older kids. They probably will not fit teens, but our party goers were all under 12.
My son absolutely loved his straw hat. They were fun for the kids to get into the spirit of the islands. But I think my son wore his for most of the day. Before, during and after the party. 🙂
Our party was so fun. My daughter loved having this theme for her birthday! She loved the decorations, pin the mustache on the tiki, the food, and everything else that came with our fun luau party. These easy luau party ideas I hope will help you put together a fun event for kids or even adults.
By adding a little alcohol to the pina colada party punch for the 21 and older crowd and buying the adult size of grass skirt, you can have an fun and easy luau party for adults. You might still want to play pin the mustache on the tiki. Depending on how much pina colada is consumed, it could be a really funny game!
Using Oriental TradingOriental Trading for all my party supplies, decor, party favors and every other thing I needed for our party made it super easy. All I had to do was add the food!
