Pom Pom Spider

The other day I shared my Spider Web Wreath that included a super cute pom pom spider.  These pom pom spiders are really easy to make.  It just takes a little bit of time.  And they look cute in any decor and in any space.
I used a technique that I first saw over at Craftaholics Anonymous.  You can read Linda’s tutorial here:
I made my spiders using some black yarn, black pipe cleaners and googly eyes.
I started out by cutting 2 circles out of a piece of cardboard about 2.5 inches in diameter.  I then cut out an inside circle about 1 inch wide.  I cut a good length of yarn and placed on top of one of my cardboard pieces, close the inside circle.  Then place the other piece of cardboard on top.  I started wrapping my yarn around my my template, being careful not to wrap my yarn that was between my cardboard pieces too.  I went around the cardboard about 3 or 4 times.  When I was done wrapping, I took my piece of yarn and started making a knot.  BUT DO NOT tie a full knot right away.  Only do the first step so that you can keep pulling it tight as you start to trim your yarn around your cardboard.  Then stick your scissors between the 2 pieces of cardboard and cut your yarn away from the template.  REMEMBER to keep pulling tight as you trim.  And when you get it all trimmed, tie a tight knot and remove from template.

I left one of my pieces of yarn long so I could attach it to my wreath for this spider.  But you can trim them all the same size and cut any other pieces that may be sticking out too far.  I added my googly eyes (these were self adhesive, but you could use hot glue.  Which is what I used to attach the legs (pipe cleaners) to the body of the spider.  Just push them into the center as much as you can and hold for a few seconds.
You can cut the pipe cleaners in half and the legs will be long like they are for the spider I used in my Spider Web Wreath.
Or you can cut the pipe cleaners into 4 pieces and they will be short like they are for this little spider that is on my entryway table.
Otherwise known as the “kids” spider.
Super simple, super fun and super cute for Halloween.
Plus you can have your kids help you make these!  Of course mom has to do the cutting and glueing, but they could wrap the yarn and help bend the legs and attach the eyes.  I know ours will get played with and the legs will be bent in all kids of ways!  Haha!
Happy Crafting!
