Candy Spiders

If you’ve been following along with me for a while, you know that I love to craft with my kids.  Especially during the holidays.  My son especially loves to get creative and craft with mom.  Since Halloween seems to be all about the candy, I thought it would be fun to use that as our crafting “media”.  We had a fun time crafting up these candy spiders thanks to #collectivebias and #sweetortreat.

It all started with this Starburst & Skittles 30 pack from Sam’s Club.

The kids and I went in to Sam’s Club with my dad a couple weeks ago and checked out the candy aisle.  (We don’t have a club card but my dad does and bonus, they love shopping with Papa!)  The kids were in candy heaven!  So many colorful options!  We found the 30 pack among the other boxes of Skittles and Starbursts.

We brought the 30 pack home and we dumped out some candy onto a tray.  I decided to use a tray for a couple reasons.  The first was to contain the candy and keep it from fall on the ground.  The second was to keep the stickiness to one area.  So just a heads up.  This is a sticky project.  But the kids loved it even more because it was sticky.  And they got to eat as they crafted!

I decided I wanted to get in on the candy crafting and made small spiders while the kids made bigger spiders. Here is how I made the small spiders.  Using a starburst I rolled 8 small pieces to create the legs of the spider.  Then using the tip of one of my fingers, I placed the 9 starburst legs around to form the legs.  Using my finger let me form the legs so the spider would stand up a little.  Then I used a single skittle as the spiders body.

For the bigger spiders, the kids unwrapped about 3 starburst and got them a little warm in their hands and rolled them all together to make a ball.  Then they flattened them out a little with the palm of their hand.  They loved that they each could use their favorite color.

Then they were able to decorate the tops of the spider bodies with skittles.  Somewhere in there are eyes and a mouth.  I’m just not sure exactly where. 🙂  They had a little trouble with forming the legs, so I helped them make some stubby legs for their spiders and they placed them on the bottom of the spider bodies.

I think these are a crack up!  Do they look like spiders?  Not so much, but they knew they were spiders, and they had fun crafting with candy!

I think it’s the stubby spider legs that make me smile.  But they fit all 8 legs on those spider bodies.

Of course they had fun eating them after the crafting was over too.  But this would be a fun project for a Halloween party, classroom party or just to use up all that Halloween candy the kids are going to bring home.

Who wouldn’t love these not so spooky spider treats?
