I was provided vinyl from Expressions Vinyl to use and review. All opinions and tutorials are my own.
As I’ve slowly been putting together my daughter’s room, I knew I wanted to make some sort of jewelry holder. She loves necklaces and they always seem to get lost! I found this wooden plaque in my craft stash and decided it would work great to hang up all her jewelry. I thought a silhouette out of vinyl would look really cute on it, but wanted to add a fun touch by making a necklace that would stand out on the silhouette. So this vinyl silhouette jewelry holder plaque is made extra fun with a blingin vinyl necklace!
So I painted the plaque a fun shade of pink (my daughters favorite color) and got to work on my silhouette. Now I used photoshop elements for this tutorial because that is the program I have and I know, but you could use any program you are familiar with. Or if you don’t have an editing program, you could print a picture of your child’s silhouette, cut it out and trace it onto the vinyl and cut it out by hand.
Don’t be afraid of the picture overload. It’s easier than it looks from these pictures. Here we go!
First open your picture in photoshop elements. Note: make sure your background isn’t close to the skin color. It makes the rest of the steps harder. I had to retake a picture in front of the red wall for more contrast. Next go up to image at the top and open up the magic extractor tool. When it opens it will look like the 2nd picture. Then click on the pen with the + (it’s red) and write or mark on all the areas you want to keep. Then click on the pen with the – (it’s blue) and mark all the areas you want to remove. Then click ok.
You should then have the part of the picture you want for the silhouette on a clear background. This is when you can use the eraser and clean up any areas that aren’t exactly like you want. Then click on the left hand side the rectangular marque tool (it looks like a dashed rectangle). Make a square around your image and then right click. Choose free transform in the options box that opens up. Click the green check mark and then you will see a blinky dashed line along the entire edge of your silhouette. It’s really hard to see in the above last picture. But trust me it is there.
Next go to the top menu and choose enhance, go down to adjust color and choose adjust hue/saturation. When the box opens move the saturation marker all the way to the left side of the bar. Then move the lightness marker all the way to the left side of the bar. It will make your silhouette black. Then you can save your silhouette. For the necklace, I didn’t do that last step, but instead, I chose the brush option of a basic circle and made it the size I wanted. In a new layer, using the necklace my daughter is wearing in the picture, I made circles and created the necklace. Once I had it the way I wanted, I just turned off the other layers and then I could save the necklace by itself.
No I used my silhouette cameo to cut the vinyl so this is how I did that. I opened both the silhouette I made and the necklace in the same project. Then I chose the trace button on the top right of the screen (blue and yellow frame icon), I outlined both of the silhouettes, clicked on the low pass filter (un click high pass filter) making them yellow and then click trace. Move the yellow images off the project and you will have your silhouettes to be cut outlined in red. Then I sized them so they would fit on the plaque. Notice I overlaid the necklace on the silhouette so I knew it would fit. Then I moved them onto the cutting mat area and put my vinyl down on my cutting mat to match the area where the silhouettes would be cut.
For this project I used the indoor black vinyl and the indoor silver metallic vinyl from ExpressionsVinyl.com. The silhouette cut out perfectly with this vinyl. Once I peeled off the excess, I covered them with transfer tape and removed the back.
I placed the vinyl silhouette on the plaque and used a card to smooth it down before I removed the transfer tape. The vinyl stayed down and the tape came off clean.
Then I did the same with the necklace. I removed the backing and placed it where I wanted it to go, smoothed it out with a card and removed the transfer tape. Easy peasy!
She was so excited about her “picture”!
Then I had my hubby drill me 3 holes and then we screwed in these 3 hooks. This wasn’t my first choice of color for the hooks, but we used what we could find. Plus, they are covered with cute necklaces, so it’s ok!
We had to go on a search to find her necklaces (still missing one), but we got them hung up and they look so cute!
Like I said, it looks a lot harder than it really is. It did help to have a machine that cuts vinyl, but it can be achieved with out one too.

Cute model for a very cute Necklace Holder. Great idea to organize & decorate, two birds with one stone.
