Can you believe Halloween is just a week away!?!?  My kids, especially my daughter, are so excited to finally be able to wear their costumes.  We have a whole week of fun activities to celebrate Halloween this year.  Not only are the kids excited to dress up and go to parties with their friends, they are even more excited about the CANDY!!  My daughter has been inquiring about what she will be using to go trick or treating this year to collect all her candy.  I knew a plain old plastic pumpkin would never do!  So I decided to make her a fun new trick or treat bag.

Glow in the dark trick or treat bag

This trick or treat bag was so easy to make.  Plus it’s cute and just perfect for Halloween.  It doesn’t just look cute with the bright fun colors, it also Glows in the Dark!  How fun is that?  Let me tell you how to turn this plain black canvas tote into a super fun glow in the dark trick or treat bag.

Glow in the dark trick or treat bag

I first made up a design on my computer.  Now I to have a cutting machine which makes this next part super easy.  You don’t have to have a cutting machine to make this.  You could use plastic letter stencils, stamps, or cut something out by hand or with an exacto knife.  I used my cutting machine to cut my design out of freezer paper.  You can read more in depth about freezer paper stencils if you aren’t familiar with them.  I ironed my freezer paper stencil to my canvas bag and I was ready to get to the fun part.

For the painting part I used folk art multi surface paint.  This paint can be used on wood, terra cotta, glass, fabric, canvas, plastic and more.  I didn’t have to worry about what type of acrylic paint I needed because I was painting canvas, and it totally makes crafting so much easier.

I painted my stencil design with my acrylic paint.  I used 2 coats of each color and let them dry between coats.  Now I am an impatient crafter so I didn’t wait very long between coats.  If it wasn’t tacky, I started on the next coat.  You could always use a blow dryer to speed up that process too.

Once my 2 coats of paint were somewhat dry, I started on the fun part!  The glow in the dark part.  Can you believe it is ?!?!  I’m was so excited to use the new glow in the dark product for this project.  It also can be used on multiple surfaces.  I painted a thin coat over the top of my stencil and let it dry for a bit.  I added a second coat so that it has extra glow!  The more coats you do, the more glow you will get.  You just leave it in sun light or under the lights in your house to “charge it” up!

Then just peel off the freezer paper stencil and you are ready to hit the town and score some sweet treat!.  If you notice the white around the witch, it is because I really wanted the purple to stand out on the black bag.  So I did a light coat of white as the first coat of paint, then I did the purple.

I thought it turned out so cute that I had to make another one for my son!

Now I’ve got two excited, soon to be, trick or treaters who can’t wait to hit the neighborhood and fill up those trick or treat bags!

Thanks Diana! I thought they turned out great. And I love the Got Candy one too. Last year I shared a free printable on the blog with the Got Candy quote. It’s one of my favorites. Here is link to it if you’d like to download it.
