The other day, Mr. C had a friend over and instead of letting them run around, play with toys and watch a movie (which they did too), I wanted to do something a little more involved.
I decided to do a BUG THEME! We sang a song about bees, talked about all the different types of bugs, made a craft and made a treat! I don’t own the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, but I would’ve read that too if I had had it. (It was too hot to go on a bug hunt.)
I think the boys would’ve been happy painting all day if we weren’t going to run out of paint. I found some Crayola brand washable paint that I love! That is what I usually use when doing any hand print crafts and it washes up like a dream!
For our treat I knew I wanted to make cupcakes that looked like they had dirt on them and had worms coming out. I had the kids crush up their own bag of oreos and sprinkle them on their cupcakes. They loved that part and Mr. C couldn’t wait to try his “dirt”. They each got 2 worms to put on top of their cupcakes.
Well the night before “bug day”, I had made some green beans with dinner and instead of throwing the cans away, I put them in the dishwasher. I decided to make cakes in the tin cans. I’ve never done it before and it was SO easy.
I sprayed the insides of the cans with non stick spray, made my cake mix and filled them about 2/3 of the way full, cooked them the same time as the cupcakes (about 20 minutes) and they were done! I let them cool and then let Mr. C decorate them with tape. I frosted the tops, covered them with crushed oreos, poked a couple holes for the worms to go into. It was that easy!
Fun day for the kids when it was too hot to play outside!
