I love making sugar cookies for special occasions.  With Easter coming up I knew I needed to make up a batch in Easter shapes.  I decided to go with eggs and in wanting to try something new, I decided to try these painted sugar cookies.

A few weeks ago I was watching the Pioneer Woman on the Food Network and she was making some fun sugar cookies with her kids.  She made up some cool kind of glaze that she put on the cookies before they were cooked.  I thought it sounded cool, but didn’t ever see the end result.  I remembered this as I was making my egg sugar cookies.  I decided to give it a try and paint my Easter egg cookies before they were baked.

Here’s a secret about me, I am really bad at looking up recipes.  I kind of just try things and see if they work.  So this is how I made my “paint” for my painted sugar cookies.  I used one egg yolk and one drop of food coloring and mixed them together.  After I baked up my cookies, I decided to see if I could find the episode from The Pioneer Women.  I found the episode, but not the recipe.  I looked around and finally found her Egg Yolk Glaze recipe.  I also realized I didn’t do it exactly like she did.  She adds water, and I didn’t.  However, the cookies still turned out, even though I didn’t add water.

I used my favorite cookie dough recipe and cut out my egg shapes.  Once I had my paint mixed up, I used a clean paint brush to paint on my designs.Painted Cookies 4

I baked them for about 9 minutes at 350 degrees and let them cool on a rack.

I decided to just leave them plain and not add any additional icing or frosting.

They are perfect for packaging up and delivering to your friends and neighbors.  (printable tags here)

I can’t wait to make more and try more fun colors!  And maybe I will remember to add the water and see how they turn out. :/

Happy Baking!
