Who loves a Monte Cristo Sandwich?
The first time I ever had one was in a small town north of our city at one of their local restaurants.  I thought it was a strange combination for a sandwich (ham, cheese, turkey, deep fried), especially when you dip it in syrup or jam.  But it is absolutely yummy!  Then when I was at Disneyland and found out you can have it there, well I just went ahead and splurged.
Here is a fun spin on this rich sandwich.
The Monte Cristo Egg Roll
I’ve never made egg rolls, of any kind, before attempting these.  I found my egg rolls wrappers in the refridgerated section of the grocery store.  (If you can’t find them, just ask someone.  That’s what I did!) I layered in a nice stack my meat and cheese and meat and cheese (I wanted the cheese to melt throughout the roll) and then I rolled them up.
the back of the egg roll wrapper package should have instructions on how to roll them up
Once I had my egg rolls all filled, I dipped them in a thick batter and put them in the hot oil to fry them up.  You don’t want your oil too hot or else your outside will get too brown and cooked and the inside will not have had a chance to melt together. (I learned the hard way.)  About 350 degree oil should be perfect.
Once they are out of the oil, put them on a paper towel to remove any excess oil.
When you’re ready to serve, sprinkle them with powdered sugar and serve them with maple syrup or jam.  I like blackberry jam with mine!

When I first told my husband my idea for this recipe he thought I was crazy and said “whatever”.  Well now he knows that the words Monte Cristo and Egg Roll can go together and be delicious!
Happy Frying!

Yum! I’ll have to try those next! I made Monte Cristo French Toast a couple weeks ago… It was delish, but I love the egg roll idea. It would be so simple!
